Creating Time: Art and Archeology
July 13 – August 6, 2024
Leslie Peterson Sapp is an artist inspired by the past, especially ancient artifacts and the myths, legends, and cultural beliefs they embody. "Few things stir our imagination more than a fragment of something that was once whole," she notes. "My inspiration comes from what remains—and what has been lost."
In this series, she turns to various archeological finds, exploring their journey through time from their origins to the present day. Her process begins with intensive research into the historical context of an artifact, excavation details, site maps, and photographs. From there, her imagination takes flight as she creates mixed media paintings to depict the object and its cultural significance through time.
