David Campiche
Clay Zen
March 9 – April 9, 2024
Clay Zen is an exhibition of sculptural and functional ceramics by David Campiche, whose creative endeavors span well beyond the realm of clay. He is a distinguished author, poet, artist, chef, forager, retired innkeeper, and environmental advocate who is a lifelong resident of Washington's Long Beach Peninsula. Everything he creates is influenced and magnified by the resplendent beauty of the natural environment surrounding him.
David hikes through forests and shorelines near his home to dig local clay, blending it with porcelain or stoneware to achieve a unique amalgam to work with. Always experimenting, he mixes his glazes with inspired combinations of ground feldspar, granite, beach sand, and wood ash, with each component chosen to contribute a particular effect. He works in a small studio on his woodland property near the dunes, shaping clay into various forms, from elegant tea bowls to large, abstract sculptures.
